Dog Training as Simple as ABC

Teaching versus Training:

Teaching your dog is simply making an association between a command and a behavior. Unfortunately, all too often many owners never progress past the teaching phase with their dogs.

Training your dog involves the 4 D’s (duration, distance, distraction and degree of difficulty). A trained dog understands that compliance with a command is not optional regardless of whether the dog is on or off leash and regardless of distractions in the environment. One must first teach the correct response to a behavior before progressing on to training – it is not fair to correct a dog if the dog does not understand how to avoid the correction.

Factors to Consider in Training:

ABC Dog Training LLC offers training for all budgets and lifestyles.

The three primary factors to consider when deciding how to train your dog are:

  • Cost
  • Customization
  • Time

Cost: for those on a limited budget but who have the time to invest in training, a group class is the most cost-effective way to train because the cost of lessons are split among several students. Owners must be willing to spend the time to train between class sessions to see any progress. Classes are scheduled on a weekly basis on the same day / same time for a set number of weeks so owners must be able to set aside that day / time as well as schedule time for training during the week.

Customization: If owners need adaptation of training methods to meet specific needs of dogs and/or owners, group classes may not be the best approach. Private lessons, where individualized attention can be provided and modifications to training methods can be made may be a better choice.  Owners are still responsible for continuing the training between lessons.  Private lessons are more expensive than group classes, but offer the advantages of personalized training and flexible scheduling.

Time: if owners have a lifestyle that allows them to integrate their dog into their daily activities, but don’t have the time to actually do the training, a Board and Train program may be the solution. In a Board and Train, the dog lives with me and I do the training. Owners are required to participate in private lessons to learn how to maintain the training once the dog is home again. Board and Train programs can be customized to meet the individual goals of the owner and costs are dependent upon the length of time of training. If the owners cannot or will not commit to maintaining the training, a Board and Train program will not be successful.

Once your dog has basic training, you can expand both your and your dog’s horizons – ABC Dog Training LLC also offers many other opportunities such as weekend workshops where you and your dog can continue to learn and have fun at the same time.
